Canaima Venezuela's first touristic
attraction the Hard Way We will reach Canaima an unconventional way: walking for 6 days in
the savanna and the jungle, and then by dugout for another 4 days, passing below Angel
Falls, the world's highest waterfall, 15 times higher than Niagara.
Kavanayen-Kamarata-Canaima 10 to 13 days trekking expedition Canaima is located in the
hearth of the jungle in the Canaima National Park, just West of what is known as the Gran
Sabana, the land of the tepuys, at the southeastern corner of Venezuela.
DAY 1 From your point of departure to Kavanayen, an Indian community in the Canaima
National Park, 90 km (55 miles) off the main road El Dorado-Sta-Elena.
DAY 2 to 7 It can take us hours to do the last 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Kavanayen
to the Karuay river. We will cross it and then it is a long trek across the jungle to
Kamarata, walking between 5 and 15 km (3 and 10 miles) daily, depending on the terrain,
the state of the river crossings etc. Arrival to the Indian community of Kamarata.
DAY 8 A day off to unwind from that strenuous hike: we will board a 4x4 vehicle to the
little Indian community of Kavac, at the foot of Auyantepuy to visit the famous caves; in
fact a crevice in the base of the tepuy and where we have to swim the last stretch to
reach a nice pool at the base of a 20 meters waterfall. Night in Kavac.
DAY 9 After breakfast, a 40 minutes walk to the waterfall Salto de Agua, where we will
relax all morning while our guides are busy preparing the river phase of our expedition.
After lunch we board motorized dugouts in Kamarata and sail the Akanán River until four
oclock where we will camp in hammocks and mosquito nets at Ibanamaru.
DAY 10 We continue sailing the Akanán River and then the Carrao, we have lunch at Kuay
and camp in the same conditions as the night before at Arenal.
DAY 11 Sailing the Carrao, we will go upriver the Churún into the Devils canyon,
in order to reach the island Ratoncito, where we leave the dugouts and continue walking up
to the base of Angel Falls, the worlds highest waterfall. Then back on the Churún,
and to the campsite Arenal where we will spend the night.
DAY 12 Down the Carrao again to the waterfall El Sapo, where we can walk behind the
curtain of water and then Canaima, our final destination. We spend the last night in
Canaima in a comfortable rustic lodge.
DAY 13 Leaving Canaima by plane. End of excursion.
