Receptíon in Canaima and transfer to the Lodge Parakaupa. In the early aftemoon we drive in an "Indian-Bongo" to the lagoon of Canaima and daré a small excursión to the foot of the Sapo Fall. Here plunges tho water of the Carrao River over Íhe edge of a rock in the underiying lagoon. in our bathing suites we can walk without problems, on a secure path behind the waterfall. An impressivc and damp experiencc, that is always worth it. In the late aftemoon we return to our lodge. The Parakaupa Lodge is a rustic but deán facility, surrounded by a nice garden and situated near the lagoon. All rooms are cquipped with ventilalor, prívate bath and shower. On the terrace there is a hammock to relax in.
Flight over the Auyantepui 6" Ángel Fall/ Visit of the Kavak Cavern Dav 2.: (B/L/P)
Today a spectacular excursión with a propeller-driven DC 3 airplane awaits us. We fly up the Carrao River and enter into the "Cañón del Diabolo" (Devil's Canon). We pasa the steep cliff walls of the 2700 m high Auyantepui; below thcrc is tho Churún River, which gets its watcrs from the tabie-top-mountain. At the endof the canon we see, if weathcr pemnitting , the "Salto Ángel", which is with almost 1000 m the longest free-falling waterfall in the worid.
During the dry season espedally the surface, with 700 sq. km, of the tabie-top-mountain is imprcssing, whilc during the rainy season (with good vicw and a lot of water) the Salto Ángel is the absoluto highiight.
Wc continué on and land on the base of the Auyantepui, in the small Indian village "Kavak". Tho villagc, built up in the typical stylc, is the ideal place for a small walk to the Kavak-Cavcrn. A narrow path takcs us to the high-wailed gorge, and the last parí of the way we must swim. Attcr about 20 minutes we arrive at the end of the gorge, where a glorious 20 m high waterfall piunges in the pool below. in the aftemoon we fly back to our camp in Canaima.

We fly from Caracas to the capital of the state of Amazonas, Puerto Ayacucho. Readily awaited, we travel from here up the Odnoco river and penétrate deep into the Venezueian Amazon jungle in an enormous dugout canoe. Wc pass indian viliages with chiidrcn piaying in the water on our way further into the impenetrable jungle. We later arrive at the srnall village of "San Pedro" where we spcnd the night in hammocks and mosquito nets in simple huts.
River Excursión to the Indian Village "San Fernando de Atabapo" Day 2. íB/L/P):
After breakfast, we load the boat with our packs and continué up river. The Orinoco river winds through the jungle like a giant snake, past Indian viliages and sandy river beaches. We leave our boat at Ncricauga Beach and walk along an Indian trail to a high look-out point (rom whrh thrf is ;i í."iit;i.stii' vicw oí the Testricted Autana tepui and the underiying jungle landscape. Oiice back at our boat, we may swim in Ihe safe waters at this marvelous beach. We arrive in the afternoon at the village of "San Fernando de Atabapo" (the former capital of the state of Amazonas). Today, we are the guests oí an indian family ot the Puinare tribe, and we sieep in the guest house in our hammocks.
Note: For the Piaroa Indiana, Autana is a sacred burial place where they believe that the spirits ot their dead Uve. In consideration of this cultural asset, Venezueian law has prohibited tounst access to the mountain since 1996.
River Excursión to Santa Bárbara

We visit this village of historical interest aftcr our breakfast. Travcinng in our boat, we soon turo off inlo the Atabapo tributary where one is easíly enticed to swim in the black river by the white beaches. We may sce various birds, such as parrots, toucans, and waterfowl. Once back on the Orinoco, we head further uprivcr and pass through the marvelous river landscapes. Indian viiiages on Ihe river shorcs, river islandn, white beaches, rock formations, and a visit to the Trapichóte" Indian rubbcr tapsters await us. Wc arrive in Santa Bárbara in the afternoon, and spend the night in Indian huts.

Jungle, Wíidlífe We board a faster boat today, and travcl to the mouth of the "Ventauri river". This región is known for <he luxurious vegetation of its enonnous jungle, dimbing plants, and wiidlife. We venture along a narrow sidearm of the river that ends in a silent lagoon. We may observe, with some luck, caimán, turties, and olher animáis. We arrive at the village of "Cano Fibra" and, aftcr a good cvening meal, sieep in cmr hammocks.
Retum Trip to Puerto Ayacucho
Day 5. MJ-h
Today we begín on our way back. Aftcr the boat is loadcd, we takc the sanie routc back down river and, with sonríe luck, see wiidlife such as otters, parrots, caimán, or turties. Wc arrive in Puerto Ayacucho in the late aftemoon where we stay in a simple hotel.
Day 6
After hreakfast, we visit the Museum of Ethnology before driving to the airport íor our scheduled flight back to Caracas. There exists fhe option of an exdting Orinoco raíting excursión of approximately half a day's duration. (see under Outdoor Spedals - "Rafting")

Merida is the largest and most traditional colonial town in the Vcnczuelan Andes. Your local guidc awaits you at the airport or in your Hotel in Merida. Until the intemational airport is completed outside oí Merida, the üight into Merida is an exdting event for the proxinüty of the mountains ana the indincd runway. Merida lies in a small valley in the high Cordillera mountains at approximatcly 1,645 m and a tlight arrival is oniy possible with full visibility. Our tour leader meéis you in the airport, after which we drive to a good hotel. Once checkcd in, we take the highest and longest cable car in the worid, the "Teleférico", up to "Loma Redonda", the second last station situatcd at 3700 m. In the eady monung, we drive in a land cruiser to the entrance of the La Mucuy national park. We rest for awhile in the aftemoon, then head back on the two and a half hour walk to our vehide in which we retum to Merida.
Across the Sierra Nevada to the Romantic Hotel

After breakfast, we drive to the Sierra Nevada National Park. The road curves up and through a wonderful valley of Paramo landscape. To the right rises the majestic Pico Bolívar (5,007 m). We pass through small, typical Andean villagcs with thcir friendiy residents, to rcach the 3,560 m high Mucuba)i Pass-Arter lunch in a typical restaurant, we drive along the highest mountain pa-w in South América, the Pico El Águila of 4,118 m, and make an excursión in the Mifafi Valley to possibly see Condors.The "Mucubaji" lagoon lies pst a short distance away, and in the sunshmc the watcr's color is a decp and beautiful blue. We parchase the necessary supplies for our excursión, then drive to Carúpano's port.J-lere our boat awaits us to take us east along the coast to the dream beach. Playa Medina. We may enjoy the beach and sea while our lunch buffet is prepared under the palm trees. Weleaveinthe moming from Santa Isabel and start on our 3 day joumey along the coast to the tip of the península where the waters of the Atiantic, Caribbean, and the Orinoco meet to form the "Dragon's mouth". Trinidad and Tobago, not far from here, are visible from the boat. This stretch of the coast is the Paria National Park and offere seduded beaches, jagged rocks, and rich, tropical vegetanon that sometünes reaches to the sea. We travel east in our boat along the coast. This stretch of the coast is the Paria National Park and offers
seduded beaches, jagged rocks, and rich, tropical vegetation that at times reaches to the sea. We travel for
5 hours to "San Francisco de Uquire", a dream beach of coconut palms and turquoise-blue waters with a
small river that runs to the sea. Here we may swim, snorkel, and fish. A day spent living the Ufe of
Robinson Crusoe. We spend the night in hammocks with mosquito nets.
To the Dragon's Mouth between the Paria Península and Trinidad

We leave our bay and continué east to the village of Don Pedro, where one deariy notes the mixture of the Venezuelan and Antiliian traditions and cultures. Weathering permitting, we venturo to the furthest point of the península and the "DragQn's mouth". This narrow passagc of water is whcrc the Caribbcan Sea and the Atlantic Ocean meet Trinidad and Tobago are easily visible from here. We then tum around and head west to the beaches "Castaño" and "Pargo", where we spend the night in our hammock camp.
Retum Trip to San Juan de los Galdones

San Juan de los Galdones, here we spend the night in a simple but nice Posada, situated directly on the beach.

The tour begins in Puerto La Cruz, and from there we travel along the coast towards Cumaná. Our route ttien turas from the sea and upinto the mountains through lush and fertile valleys, and past small villages. We arrive in Caripe after approximately 4 hours, and here we spend the first night in a simple hotel. We still have enough time to visit the near-iying Guácharo Cave. It's 10 km length makes it the longest cave of stalactites and stalagmites in South América. It is inhabited by thousands of Guácharo birds, aiso known as Oil birds. Intolerant to sunlight, they orient themselves as do bats, by radar.

After breakfast, we start the second stage of our tour. The Orinoco Delta measures 370 km across its mouth, has 40,240 sq. km of jungle, swamp, and mangrove forests, and a multi-branched river system. We travel by boat along the "Morical Largo" river and, with some luck, we may see howler monkeys and parrots. We return to dvilization in the aftemoon, and spend the night in a simple hotel in Puerto Ordaz.

We drive south towards the Gran Sabana, passing through gold mining towns Upata, Guasipati, Tumeremo, El Dorado, km 88 and Venezuela'8 second largest jungle región, thtí Sierra de Imataca. Btíginning at km 88 ,the jungle road winds up to the high plateau of the Gran Sabana. Before us extends the endiess, shimmering Gran Sabana and ifs legendary tepuis (table-top mountains) rising majestically from the Toliffitgsavanna. The climate of the Gran Sabana is cooler than that of the scorching lowlands, and a fresh breeze often blows. We arrive in the late aftemoon at our hostel by the "Hipidos de Kamoirán". This fadlity has simple double rooms with bathrooms.

We soon leave the main asphalted road and drive along the not paved road to Kavanayén. This is our tirst encounter with the Pemón Indians, who live in huts sparsely scattered along the way. We come to the Indian village of Iboribó and from here we have a 30 minute walk to the Chinak-Merú waterfall. The
great quantities of water that plummet 105 m down is an overwhelming spedacle. A yhort swim in Ihese waters is pleasantly refreshing. Back in our land cruiser, we drive on to Kavanayén's oíd mission station of the Franciscan Order. The Ptari tepui lies not far from this vvonclerfu'ny .•.líuA-u i/i'i'i,H';r '.V^ .-,iwi>il ;^e night either in the mission dormitories or in two man tents.

We visit the beautiful, 50 m high Kama-Merú, swim in the natural pools of thü Arapan-Mürú, and walk on the red rock bed of the Quebrada de Jaspe, a brilliant river and waterfall that run over a spectacular rock bed of scmi-predous, red jasper. We arrive in th"' cvf-nin^ in Santa Firna, situatod oniy 15 km from thv Brazilian border. The inhabitants are predominantly a mixture of Indians, Bra/.ilian.s, and Vene^uelan gold miners. We spend the night in a wondcrfully situatüd lodge in double rooms with prívate bathrooms.

I. Altemative: Wehave our breakfasts and then drive to the airport in Santa Elena de Uairén to take our plañe to Canaima. Our flight is in a DC 3 with a spectacular panorama over the Gran Sabana. According to the weather and flight route, we fiy along the Auyantepui, the 2,640 m of sandstone massiv that lies mostty hidden in the clouds. We have a short slopover there, and so we tour by dugoul canoe the breathtakingly beautiful Canaima lagoon and it 7 waterfalls of the Caroní river. Our flight leaves here for Puerto Ordaz, where our tour ends. From herc we havc the possibility to make flight connections to Porlamar, Barcelona, or Caracas.
IL Altemative:
After breakfast, we drive the same stretch of paved road again and stop on the way al lwo more marvelous waterfalls ("Salto Yuruanf" and "Los Pozos encalados de Suruape"). A 10 hour drive with the Toyola Landcruiser brings us in the late aftemoon to either Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolívar.

After breakfast we leave our camp with motorized canoes and advance into the Delta. We expedence the labyrinth of the river with its narrow river channeis and after each nverbend wc arf surpnsed by anolher landscape. We nave the possibüity to get to know the way of Ufe and the customs ot the Warao-Indians. With our boat we drive through the smaller channeis of the extensivo river labyrinth. The narrow watercourses are overgrown by dense jungle, passing the marshiand of the mangrovcs, with some luck we xnieht observe capuchin inonkeys, parrots, toucans and otherexotic animals-We nave the opportunity to go for piranha-fishing, visit an Indian village nearby or we can make a ríver excursión in an Indían dug-out-canoe. Before sunset we reach our camp.

After breakfast we undertake a walk through the jungle on which we will leam more about the healing power and the use of the different jungle planta and how they are used by the Indians today. The lifestyics and housc constructions bespeak of the yery individual charactcrs of thü residents. Many ot them live in part from mining. Either by hand or using smaíl pumps, they search tor gold and diamonds in particular. As long as it is not a holiday, we bave the opportumty to visit a miptí and try panning for gold ourselvcs. Later in tlw aftemoon, we hikc past strcams, orchids, and forcst up to the edge of "El Abismo" (the abyss) where a breathtaking view of the endiessiy wide and shimmering Brazilian jungle awaifcs us. After breakfast, we drive back past the border town of Santa Elena de Uairén and across the endiess, shimmering Gran Sabana with its legcndary tepuis (table-top mountains), tree-lined deán rivers, jungles, and palm grovcs. The sabanna climatc is coolcr than that of the scorchin^ lowlands, and a frcsh brcczc oftenblows. A WOnderful stretch across the Gran Sabana lirs bríorr us alony which wc vi.sil Ihc 50 m high "Kama-Merú", swim in the pool ot the marvelous "Agua Fría", showcr in the "Quebrada de Jaspe" (watcrfall and rivcr that runs ovcr a bcd of semi-prccious, red jasper), and visit the rapids at "Suruape" or

The tour bayas with an early flight in a propeller-driven airplane from Ciudad Bolívar to Kavak, during which there is a marvelous view of the underiying savanna and jungle landscape. With good weathcr, we fly over Auyantepui which, with a surface of 700 sq.km and a height of 2400m, is one of the biggest tablemountains in Venezuela. We fly between the steep cliff walls of the "Cañón del Diablo" (DeviPs canyon) andón to the endwhere the longest free-falling waterfall in the world,"Angel Falls", plunges almost 1000 m down to fonn the Churún river. The view of the falla, weather permitting, is always the absolutc tughiight We land in Kavak, an idylic village of palm-thatched huts that lies at the base of the massive table-top mountain, "Auyantepui".
From here we make our way to the Kavak Cavem. A narrow path takes us to the high-wailes gorgr, and the last part of the way we must swim. We arrive after about 21) minutes to the end of the gorge where a glorious 20 mhigh waterfall plunges into the pool below. For those who wish to hike on further, there is süll the Toma de Agua" to visit. This littie visited waterfall lies about an hour up the mountain. riere one can nave a roarvelous swim under the waterfall, as well as a fantastic view of the underiying landscape. After Techeddng all the preparations for our riverexcursion, a jeep will take us to Kamarata. We leave Kamarata in motorized Indian canoes and head down to the Akanan river, passing jungle and savanna on our way around the tepui. This river later flows into the black-watered Churun river, the way to the foot of Ángel Falls. We pass through truly impressive landscapes as we journey past Auyantepui's vertical slopes. 

Depending on the water levef at times we may have to get out of the boat and walk while the Inians manage the canoes safely through the turbulent waters. Ángel ralis is, with almost 1.000 m , the longest free-falling waterfall on the earth. The haze of the early moming makes the high diffs seem mysterious and one is almost indined to believe the tales of the Indians. In Canaima, where the Carrao river falls down into the lagoon with its seven cascados, we'U have an enchanting experience, visiting the Salto Sapo. Our river excursión takes us up the black waters of the Akanán river until we join up with the "Kamadak" river. Whcn the water level is extremely low, we may have to waik to aiiow the indians to manage the iighter canoe more safely. Along the riverside, we see the Pemón Indians who live in small, family-bascd communities. boat and walk.for approximately an hour through the thick jungle- Each person carries as much as possible, and thc índian portere cany the rest of the gear. We make several excursions daily over the next days, depending on the season, by boat or open vehides (safan styie) that are spedfically adapted to besí observe the wildíife in theu- nalural habítate.
At Hato, due to a strong relationship with the land, all forms of hunting have for decades been forbidden. Thus, there existe rich and varied wildhfe, as in the Brazilian Pantanal Valley. There are, above all, cayman, paca, red-footed tortoises, giant anteaters, and capybaras. More than 300 different spedes of birds live here as well, sudí as the great egret, the scarlet ibis, the American flamingo, the guU-billed tem, and the gray necked wood-rail, to ñame but a very few. Here the wildíife and grazing caltle herds live together in harmony.

We then make the worthwhile visit to Cachamay dty park wherc the Caroní river rushcs over rapids and falls on way to its confluence with the ncariying Orinoco. Wc drivc south towards the Gran Sabana, passing through mining towns Upata, Guasipati, Tumeremo, El Dorado, km 88 and Venezuela's second largest jungle región, the Sierra de hnataca. Beginning at km 88, the jungle road winds up to the high platean of the Gran Sabana where the legendary tepuis (table-top-mountains) risc majcstically from the rolling savanna.
The climate of the Gran Sabana is cooler íhan that of the scorchinfi lowlands, and a frcsh breczc oftcn blows-We stay in a simple hostel by the "Rápidos de Kamoirán" in double rooms, private bathrooms.

Wc drive further on after a good breakfast, soon leaving the paved road. Wc take the red dirt road to the Indian village of Iboribó, near to which lies the majestic Chinak-Mcrú waterfalls. We walk for approximately 30 minutes from here to the overwhelming spectacle of the thundering, 105 m tall waterfall. We continué driving along the rough and bumpy road, arriving in Kavanayén in the afternoon. Kavanayón is an oíd Mission station of the Frandscan Ordcr. It is interesting to sec that, besides the priests, Kavanayén is populated almost cxclusivcly by Indian.s. This village of stonc hüu.sc.s i.s all the lovelicr for its proximity to PtariTepui. We drive back alcmg the same route to the pavcd main road, and then head further south. A wonderful stretch of the Gran Sabana lies before us in which we visit the 50 m high Kama-Merú, swim in the pool of the marvelous Arapan Merú cascado, and walk along the red stone bed of senü-precious jasper at the Quebrada de Jaspe (waterfall and river that runs over the bed of jasper). We arrive in the border town of Santa Elena around evening. Located approximately 15 km from the Brazilian border, its inhabitants are prcdonúnantly a mixture of Indiana, Venezuelan gold mincrs, and Brazilians. We spend the night in 9 wonderfully situated lodge with double rooms with prívate bathrooms.

We nave our breakfasts and then drive to the airport or bus station in Santa Elena de Uairén. L Altemative: to take a plañe to Canaima. Our flight is in a DC 3 with a spectacular panorama over the Gran Sabana. According to the weather and flight route, we fiy along the Auyantepui, the 2,640 m of sandstone massif that lies mostíy hidden in the douds. We have a short stopover there, and so we tour by dugout canoe the breathtakingly beautiful Canaima tagoon and it 7 waterfalls of the Caroní river. Our flight leavea here for Puerto Ordaz, where our tour ends. From here we have the possibility to make flight connectíons to Podamar, Barcelona, or Caracas.

The tour begins in Santa Elena de Uairén, reached by plañe or bus from Caracas, Ciudad Bolívar, oc Puerto Ordaz. The tour leader greets you upon arrival and you drive in a 4 x 4 land cruiser, equipped with all the necessary equipment and food supplies for the next 7 days, to the Indian village of Paraitepui. We leave Sta. Elena and drive through the Gran Sabana with its legendary Tepuis (table-top-mountains), which rise out of a landscape skirted by forest, deán rivers, palm groves and tropical jungles. On our way we drive straight through the Gran Sabana and after an adventurous route we reach after a 3 hour drive Paraitepui, wher we spend the night in our camp.
Beynning of the Trek Dav 2. (B/L/D):
Today begins our trek to Roraima tepui. We leave Paraitepui and hike across the Gran Sabana's typical landscape of rolling hiüs and rivers. After approximately 4 hours of hiking, we cross over the Kukenán river and strike our camp on the other side. The last hours of the day are spent swimming in the refreshing river, and having a hearty dinner beside the campfire.
One of Sout América 's mst impressive natural displays, the Gran Sabana lies in southeastem Venezuela, bordered by neughboring Brazil and Guyana. Part of the 450.000 spuare kilometer Guyana Shild, it is one of the oidest land fonnations on earth. The layers of sandstone deposited over the gigantic mass of granito, the Guyana Shield, were eroded over the course of millions of years by water and wind, thus torming this table-topnaountainterramof peculiar and unique beauty. Savanna plateaus skirtcd by forest, deán rivera, palm groves, and tropical Jungle surround these majestic mountains callcd "Tepuis", or "Houses of the Gods" in the language of the native Indiana. To date, approximately half the tepuis are not yct touched by man. Many of these steep-wailed fortresses lie hidden under dense doud cover.
Trek to the Base Camp Dav3.(B/L/D):
Today we start out on our trek to our base camp at Roraima tepui. In the almost 4 hour long hike, we cross the enchanting savanna and its forest galleries. At the base camp, with good weather, we have a tantastic view of Roraima tepui rising before us. Here, there are different types of orchids and a great variety of plants to observe and photograph.
Climb to the Top Dav4.(B/L/P)
Today we dünb to 2800 m to readi Roraima's plateau. This is the most diffícult, but aiso the most interesting part of the trip. We trek through dense jungle, cross crystal-dcar streams, and pass behind a

The Wonder of Roraima

On the Roraima plateau we shall understand why this unique ecological system is called "the Lost Worid". After approximately 6 hours of hiking back down, we reach the shores of the Tekparu river. Here we can enjoy a wonderful swim and camp for the night.
Visit Jasper Falls and the return to Santa Elena Dav7.(B/L/P):
We hike back to the village of Paraitepui where our land cruiser awaits us. Paraitepui, a Pemón Indian village, is beautifully-situated overlooking the Kukenanparu valley. We drive further on to the famous jasper Falls, the "Quebrada de Jaspe", a river and small waterfall that runs over a strikingly beautiful bed of semi-predous, red jasper. After a short swim in the river, we drive to a marvelously situatcd tourist camp near the border town of Santa Elena de Uairén.

In the eariyinoming we go staiking by foot or by canoe to see the awakenmg of the animal kingdom. Abovc all a great variety of birds is living here. Arrival

Arrival and reception at Maiquetía international airport (Venezuela)(+G). Afterwards flight to Ciudad Bolivar. Ciudad Bolivar is located at the river Orinoko and is one of the oldest colonial style cities of Venezuela where Simon Bolivar, who freed south Amarica from the European conquistors, announced the Carta of Indepencence of United Columbia. Reception at the airport and transfer to a nice small lodge. Overnight stay in rooms with private bathroom.

Bus trip to the Gran Sabana
Day 2 . Su: (-/-/-)
The whole day is at your disposal. You may make a stroll through the old town of Ciudad Bolivar or relax at the swimming pool or take a nap in a hammoc. In the evening we drive to the bus station and a public 5* bus (WC, reclining seats, AC) takes you to "Santa Elena de Uairen". On a 12-hour ride you cross the flat steppe land (Llanos), the dense jungle of "Imataca", and up to the Gran Sabana with its legendary table mountains . You reach Sta. Elena de Uairen at the Brazilian border, where you will be received(+TL). This small town is fascinating for its mixture of peoples, its charming gold digger bars, merengue and salsa music. Overnight stay at a simple hotel (-TL).

Off-Road past Diamond Mines on the way to El Paují
Day 3. Mo: (-/-/-) (+TL)
On a bad, muddy road we drive by jeep along the green Brazilian border to "El Paují". On our way we pass Indian huts and gold digger camps, whose inhabitants search for gold and diamonds in the jungle rivers. We will also visit some lovely places with splendid views or wonderful bathing pools. In the afternoon we reach "El Paují" (the youngest Venezuelan village that was founded during the Hippie movement of the sixties). Today, the build of the houses and the lifestyles of the inhabitants still show their very individualistic characters. Many inhabitants earn their living by working a little in the mines. With small pumps and by hand, they look mainly for diamonds. As long as it is not a holiday, we shall have the opportunity to try our hands at gold washing at a local mining site. In the evening, we meet for dinner at a small restaurant where the locals come together. We spend the night at a small Posada.


Excursion to the Abyss and the Amazon jungle
Day 4. Tu: (-/-/-) / (+TL):
After breakfast we walk for about 30 minutes through savanna and jungle to reach "El Abismo"; the edge of the high plateau of the Gran Sabana. Here one has a clear view of the fantastic panorama of the underlying Brazilian jungle. On our way back, we explore the region's caves, crystal-clear brooks, and great variety of orchids. Back in El Paují, we take a last dip in the river before driving back along the rough road to Sta. Elena, where we stay at our small hotel.
Tonight you may immerse yourself in the local nightlife. With only 3 popular bars there is not much choice, but this is where natives and visitors meet for drinking and dancing to deafening merengue and salsa music. 

Off-Roading to Brazil and River Adventure on the Río Branco
Day 5. We: (-/-/D) (+TL)
Today we go south by jeep the border to Brazil. We leave the high plateau of the Gran Sabana and the curving road takes us deeper into the Brazilian steppe land, crossing the flat grasslands broken up by small rivers and palm groves. Now and then one sees Indian huts and cattle herds, or sometimes a cayman warming itself on the hot asphalt road. We arrive after approximately 3 hours in Boa Vista, the capital of the state of Roraima. 
Our first adventure, riding up the Río Branco by boat, starts from here. The first stage, lasting approximately 3 hours, is the crossing of the steppe land that slowly turns into jungle and swampland. We see, with some luck, fresh-water dolphins, waterfowl, giant heron, and turtles. We have the most luck angling, and fish for pirañas that we can grill for dinner.
We spend the night in tents on the river's shore.

Wildlife-Watching on the Río Branco and the Nightlife in Boa Vista
Day 6. Th: (B/L/-) / (+TL)
We penetrate deeper into the jungle region along a tributary of the main river. The marvelous green of the jungle surrounds us and, with a bit of luck, we see monkeys, parrots, and other animals up close. After a 5 - 6 hour journey (with rests and goings-ashore) we arrive back at Boa Vista and set up camp on the river shore. We see something of Brazilian life this evening when we visit the city's promenade where the people gather in small bars and varieties of artists perform. To experience this marvelous atmosphere is a must.

Of Interest: The district of Roraima covers a surface area of 224,131 sq. km. The main landscapes of this low populated area are seemingly endless savannas with palm-tree groves, lakes, and rivers, and the mountain region of "La Sierra de Pacaraima". An entire 50% of this district is divided into Indian reservations, mainly inhabited by the "Waimire-Atroari", "Wau-Wau", and "Maiongog" Indian tribes. 

Rock Paintings and Back to Venezuela
Day 7. Fr: (B/-/-) / (+TL)
We leave Boa Vista and drive back to Venezuela. We find ourselves in the "Roraima" district, the northernmost state of Brazil. We reach "Santa Elena de Uairén" in the afternoon and spend the night in our small hotel.

Jasper Falls and Palm Groves
Day 8. Sa: (B/-/-) / (+TL)
We head north in the jeep and cross the unique and beautiful Gran Sabana. The flat-topped mountains rise to 3,000 m high above the rolling savanna, palm groves, and rivers. (The British author Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the fantasy novel "The Lost World", describing an unchanged world of dinosaurs preserved on top of the mesa mountains.) We stop at the Gran Sabana's most beautiful sites and waterfalls to swim or explore. We visit the waterfalls Kama Merú, Arapan Merú, Quebrada de Jaspe (waterfall and river flowing over a bed of semi-precious red jasper), and Suruape where we have a refreshing swim in the natural water pools by the wonderful cascades. 
We arrive at the Indian settlement "Iboribó" in the afternoon and put up our tents for the night. It is a short walk across the savanna to the Chinak Merú waterfall whose great quantity of water plummets 105 m to the river below. It is an overwhelming spectacle. Back in the Indian village, we enjoy twilight atmosphere as the sun sets behind the mountains. Overnight stay in our tents. 

Of Interest: The Gran Sabana is one of the oldest geological formations in the world, as well as one of the most impressive in South America. Underlying this sandstone mountain terrain is an enormous clod of granite called the Guayana Shield. Millions of years of erosion by wind and water formed this landscape of unique and unusual beauty. It is a land of savanna-like plateaus, tree-lined, clean rivers and palm groves that alternate with tropical jungle, and over which tower the majestic mesa mountains, or "tepuis". Thick cloud cover hides many of these steep-walled fortresses, and no-one has set foot on approximately half of them. "Tepui", in the language of the Pemón Indians, means "House of the Gods". The climate up here, more pleasant than in the lowlands, is cooler and there often blows a fresh breeze.

Walk to Karuai Falls
Day 9. Su: (B/L/D) (+TL)
In the morning we leave Iboribó and drive along the rough road to "Kavanayén". Along the way we come across the native Pemón Indians who live here in their huts. Kavanayén is an old missionary station of the Franciscan Order, built at the beginning of the 20th century. Right beside the village rises the Ptari Tepui (2,600 m) from the savanna like a giant piece of cake.

We have to overcome an extremely difficult 15 km stretch of road in order to reach today's destination of "Karuai". At times, we shall have to get out the jeep and walk so that it can pass more easily. A spectacular view of the tepui landscape is the reward for our efforts. On a clear day you can see up to 12 Tepuis on the horizon. 
A picturesque waterfall awaits us in Karuai. This small paradise is ideal for swimming or just sunbathing on the big rocks within view of this natural spectacle. Overnight stay in 2-man tents. 

River Excursion in Dugout Canoe 
Days 10 & 11. Mo -Tu : (B/L/D) / (+TL)
By dugout canoe and accompanied by Indians, we paddle down the Karuai river. Noiselessly we pass through jungle and savanna. With a little luck we get to see parrots and waterfowl. To overcome the waterfall Salto Hueso (Bone Falls), we all have to strongly tackle the job of carrying down the equipment and the canoe. 
We paddle further downstream to reach "Salto Techinén". From the edge of the waterfall we can see the massifs "Chimata" and "Akopán" tepuis. This region is hardly touristed and, except for a few Indian families, there are only jungle, animals, savanna, and tepuis. In these two days we camp on the banks of the river. To observe the wildlife, we ride along the river after sunset. As most of the animals are night-active, it is more likely that we can see animals like the lapa (large water rodent), venado (deer), and tapirs. We end the day beside a romantic campfire accompanied by the sounds of the jungle.

Of Interest: The Indians say that hundreds of years ago, "Salto Hueso" was the scene of a battle between hostile Indian families. Many died, and the corpses lay strewn all around. When the Spanish arrived in the area and found so many bleached bones glistening in the sun, they named the place "Salto Hueso", or "Bone Falls".

Kavanayén Mission Station
Day 12. Wed: (B/L/-) / (+TL):
Back to our starting-point Karuari, we load our vehicle and drive back on the same difficult route to Kavanayén. We stay overnight either in the dormitories of the missionary station or in our tents. The still active mission station takes special care of the education of the Indian children and still supports the typical crafts of the Indians. 

By Bus to Ciudad Bolívar 
Day 13. Thu: (-/-/-) :
We return by the same route to the paved main road (+TL). Here you board the public bus coming straight from Sta. Elena and travel northwards(TL). From the 1,100 m-high plateau of the Gran Sabana you drive down the windy road into the damp and humid "Imataca" jungle region, the home of the gold diggers who dwell in miserable tin huts. You pass through the region of "km 88", "El Dorado", and "Tumeremo", reaching Ciudad Bolívar in the evening. Here you are received and brought to a hotel** located at the Orinoco river(+AA). 

Day Trip to the Highest Waterfall on Earth

This day is free at your disposal. You may visit the colonial center of Ciudad Bolívar, go shopping, or stroll along the riverbank promenade to watch the street life. 
There is the possible option to fly to Canaima or Kavak by propeller plane that passes over the gigantic Auyantepui with the highest waterfall on earth, the "Salto Angel". To fly past this tepui's steep walls and bizarre rock formations is a very special experience. (At the moment the price is approx. US$ 230. per person). Overnight stay in hotel as the night before.

The National Park of Canaima is located at the southeast of the Bolivar State at approximately 225 km from the Orinoco River, in the area denominated "Gran Sabana". Due to the relevant and quality of its scenic and environmental resources, this area was decreed National Park on 1962 and its surface was expanded to 3 millions hectares on 1997. Has been proposed as Natural Patrimony of the Humanity by the International Union for the Preservation of the Nature.
In the great area of magnific landscapes, there are combined forest and savannas with the spectacular Tepuyes grandiose staircase landings of tubular shape with height up to 2.800 ms.. and with more than 3.500 million years of antiquity. The peculiar ecosystems at the top of the Tepuyes are inhabited by animal and vegetable species unique in the world (endemics). From one of these "The Auyantepuy" sprouts the Angel Fall, the highest water fall in the world, with 1.005 ms. height. The region is crossed by numerous rivers which more to the north and often coming down from the "Gran Sabana" feed the big hydroelectric plants. All the way through the savannas of the region there are small communities of Pemones Indians which live of agriculture, hunting, fishing, handicraft and work related with tourism.

You take an early morning flight from Porlamar to the Arekuna Camp with overflight of the Angel Falls . After arrival in the Lodge, we will take our bungalows, which are located on a small hill fifty meters far from the beaches of the Caroni river. 
After lunch you undertake a first excursion by boat on the Caroni River to enjoy the magnific landscape of the sacred mountains, the Tepuyes. 
After Lunch in the Camp you get to know the "Las Babas" fall, which splits the Caroni river in two. After unloading starts a walk with stops in different sight seeing spots to enjoy the visual and auditive spectacle that produce the successive water falls along 2 km.. Along the river you may also find a spectacular sandy beach bathed with the reddish waters typical of the area. After a refreshing swim and sun bath begins the return going by another path that borders the Caroni. During the dried season and due to the lower down level of the water, during the navigation it may be appreciate the carved petroplyphs that dates from the Pre-Columbian epoch. Later you visit the Community of the "Pemones" indians, that live from hunting, fishing and agriculture, fruit picking and manufacturing of the handicrafts. Dinner and overnight stay in the Lodge.

Excursion on the Antabares River
Day 2 (B/L/D)
After breakfast you start a navigation of approximately 20 minutes by the Caroni river , you will find at your left hand side the Nonoy Tepui. There you will take a walk of approximately 40 minutes, going through savannas, forests and "Morichales", until arriving to the slopes of the tepuy. There you will find a canyon where emerges the "Nonoy Meru" water fall. 
The natrual pools that are located at the foot of the water fall invites you to have a bath and to relax. In the afternoon you take a walk along a small path that goes from the camp to the Antabares river. During the way you may see and hear a variety of animals typical of the area: periwigs, macaws, toucans, as well as different kinds of monkeys. You spend the night in the Arekuna Camp.

Walk through the jungle and flight to Los Roques

We enjoy our breakfast having a wonderful view over the river. Afterwards we make a stroll through the jungle and learn more about its flora and fauna. Then we fly to our next destination the Archipelago Los Roques via Porlamar. After landing at the main island Gran Roque, we check-in at the Posada on Los Roques. All rooms provide private bathroom and fan. The afternoon is at your disposal. The typical island village invites you to get to know the life style and the the poeple who live there.

Thanks to this decree and to the dedication of the National Park Institute sole authority. The conservation of the ecosystem of the park is guaranteed. The touristic activity is regulated and the number of visitors is limited. It was allowed only a limited number of lodgings in the town, which should maintain the architectural type typical of the coasts and islands of the east of the country.

Arrival at the Orinoco delta and visit of the Bird Island

From Porlamar we start early in the morning and fly to Tucupita, located in the east of Venezuela. Reception and transfer to the embarking place. After a 1 1/2 h trip by boat we reach the Camp Orinoko Lodge , guided through the labyrinth and small channels of the Orinoco delta passing the small communities of the native poeple living in small huts at the shore of the river, through the dense flora and fauna of the jungle. You are welcomed in the the Camp and check-in your rooms which provide private bathrooms and and mosquito net. Then we travel by boat through the canyons of the Delta of Orinoko Delta and experience the sunset in the tropical jungle. Dinner and Overnight stay in the Camp.

Of Interest:
The Orinoco Delta is one of the biggest deltaic regions of the world, covering 40.240 square kilometers of swampy surfaces and multiple streams that end up in the Atlandtic ocean. In the area, thanks to the juction of the waters of the Caroni river, with the giant load of nutrients that it brings all along its run, and the salty waters of the atlantic ocean there exist a dense forest vegetation denoted for its typical mongroves of our coasts. This rich atmosphere is inhabited by an abundant and varied tropical fauna constituted among titis monkeys, "Capuchinos" monkeys, araguatos, aligators, iguanas, water snakes, water dogs and fishes like the piranhas.

The main inhabitants of this region are the Waraos indians, that form small communities at the borders of the "caños", where they built their palafitte housing. These natives are still living as their ancestrals and they are dedicated to the fishing, hunting, fruit collection and artisan work as hammocks, baskets and wood made figures, world famous due to its beauty and quality.

Towards the east and near the Atlantic you will find small fishing villages and to the west, near the capital of the state, from where the streams seperate from the plentiful Orinoco, there are small agrarian and cattle communities. Eventhough the intense traffic of ships proceeding from the Orinoco loaded with iron and bauxite, this remains one of the most virgin areas of Venezuela.

Early in the morning just after sunrise you will navigate by the caños appreciating the thick forest vegetation prevailing in this area and observing the typical fauna of the region. Program Course

From Barcelona to the 30 km long palm-lined beach
Day 1. Sa: (-/L/D)
In the morning we drive from Barcelona to the west along the coast. After a 1 1/2 hours drive we reach the small Village of Boca de Uchire, situated between a lagoon and the Ocean. Now we are only minutes away from the Posada where we will spent the night. In the afternoon, we go by boat in the lagoon to witness the fascinating spectacle of the hundreds of scarlet-red and snow-white ibis returning from their search for food to gather in the mangrove trees. 
Note: The accommodations are double rooms with private bathrooms.

Mochima National Park
Day 2 . Su: (B/-/-)
Back in our vehicle, we drive along the coast towards Puerto La Cruz where Mochima National Park begins. Crystal-clear water and coral reefs. At various points along this hilly road, there are splendid views of the fjords of Mochima. We will drive up to the montauns where will will enjoy a 30min walk through the rain forest and coffee plantations. After a short break we go back and have lunch at familiar restaurant. After lunch we are going to visit a small coffee plantation. While sipping on a fresh brewed coffee or cocoa, we will learn somthing about the cultivation of coffee. We contiunue and have a wonderful view over the Mochima National Park passing the wonderful situated waterfall San Pedrito which cascades 30m into a natural bassin. A marvellous site to take a bath. We arrive at the village Altos de Sucre where we spend the night in wonderful located colonial style pensions. The nice garden, swimming pool and restaurant invites you to stay.
A Day at Playa Blanca Beach
Day 3. Mo: (B/-/)
Right in front of our pension are the fishing boats that take us on the 15 minute boat ride to Playa Blanca's white sands, turquoise waters, and fantastic underwater world. We have at hand everything that we may need to enjoy this beautiful place. In the afternoon, we return to our small pension after a wonderful day of sea, sand, and sun. 
Note: Wooden fishing boats, equipped and licensed for tourism, make the transfers to and from the beach.
To the Longest Stalactite Cave in South America
Day 4. We: (B/L/-) 
The journey continues via Cumaná to the Peninsula of Paria. Close to the village El Pilar we will visit the buffalo ranch Rio de Agua. After lunch we observe the flora and fauna of the small channels by canoa. 
We continue then to drive inland through the mountains, past typical villages and small yucca, corn, and tobacco farms until we arrive at the village of Caripe. Nearby lies the famous Guacharo cave that was first explored in 1799 by Alexander von Humboldt. At dusk, we gather there to see and hear the outswarming of the shrieking, day-blind Guacharo birds (oil birds) as they begin their nightly flight. We spend the night in a simple hotel with double rooms and private bathrooms.

Visit the Guacharo Cave and Journey in the Orinoco Delta
Day 5. Th: (B/-/D)
Today we venture approximately 1.5 km into the Guacharo cave, accompanied by a guide. The first section has gigantic stalactites and stalagmites that have grown together over many thousands of years. The Guacharo birds make their nests in the roof of the cave and orient themselves in the darkness by ultrasound. 
We leave the coastal Cordillera and drive across the prairie landscape in direction of Maturin, the most important city of petroleum industry in the eastern region, towards "Boca de Urucoa" where a waiting boat takes us along the rivers and into the heart of the delta. Typical vegetation, huge trees, monkeys, water fowl, and river dolphins are our first impressions of this region. We arrive in the afternoon after approximately 2 hours boat ride at a rustic camp that has double rooms with private bathrooms.
Excursion to the Orinoco Delta
Day 6. Fr: (B/L/D)
At the crack of dawn we travel along the river canals by boat to experience the awakening of the surrounding jungle as screeching parrots greet the day. 
After a pleasant breakfast, we leave our camp and head up the Caño Manamo river. We leave the boat in a small sidearm of the river, and equipped with rubber boots, walk through the marshy jungle and learn more of the ways of life of the Warao Indians. We arrive in Tucupita in the afternoon, from where we head south by ferry across the kilometer-wide Orinoco river to Puerto Ordaz and our simple hotel accommodations with double rooms and private bathrooms. 
Note: The Hotel / Residencias Tore has 24 single and double rooms with private bathrooms and showers. The facility, located in downtown Puerto Ordaz, is simple, but clean.

After breakfast transfer to either Puerto Ordaz or Ciudad Bolivar airport for optional connecting flight possibilities to Caracas or connection to further tours. End of our services.

257 SHA-19: Caura River Tour 7 Day

Two hundred years ago, the jungles of the Caura River attracted more than 2000 visitors for the flowering time of the Sarrapia. The oils of this nut-bearing fruit were in high demand by both the perfume and pharmaceutical industries. 
Enormous boulders of granite in the river prevented access to the paddle steamers that attempted to enter this virgin jungle region. This natural barricade of granite boulders and trenches gave Las Trincheras its name. The Caura river was the only connecting route to civilization.
Today a partly paved road leads through the thickly overgrown jungle to Las Trincheras. The population remains between 80 and 100 people. Many have wandered to the city since the crude oil boom. The Trincheñeros live today from fishing, their conucos (small fields prepared for planting by clear-cutting and burning; to fertilize the otherwise poor-growing soil), and from our jungle camp Merevarí.

Working together with the villagers, we offer a jungle tour in Indian dug-out canoes on the Caura river to the Para waterfall. Nobody navigates the river like the native Maquiritare Indians and the people of Las Trincheras.
With its rapids and scattered granite boulders (from the Guyana Shield), the river promises an eventful journey of adventure. 
With luck river dolphins, otters, turtles, and a great variety of birds (some of them rare) will accompany us along the river. And don't forget....parrots are here at home!

Our small jungle camp Merevarí lies on the edge of the village, directly on the Caura river. The terrace with a view of the bizarre rock landscape is the center point for all events and meals. Here, the villagers pass by to chat and, when one is not paying attention, a bold lorito (small, green parrot) may unexpectedly land on the table.

For those who desire, there is fishing with the natives, exploring the river in kayaks, or enjoying the cool, wet of the black river water from the sandy shore. We also offer day trips to a granite island in the river, to the La Leona waterfall, and to watch the wildlife in Caño Mato.

A large, inviting, colonial house with a gigantic kitchen/dining area and two bathrooms is run by our host. Our cook pampers your guests with delicious, rich, and interesting meals. The village generator supplies electricity for lighting between 18:00 and 22:00 hours. We sleep in palm-thatched, round Indian huts in hammocks with mosquito nets; having no walls, we drift off to the sounds of the surrounding jungle.

Program Course
Drive from Ciudad Bolívar to "Las Trincheras" (250 km, 4,5 - 5 hrs)
Day 1. (-/L/D):
We meet in the Hotel Valentina in Ciudad Bolívar at 11:00 a.m. to load the land cruiser. Our journey starts driving parallel to the Orinoco river to Caicara del Orinoco. This hilly prairie landscape is crossed by small rivers lined with Moriche palm trees. The fruits of this tree are edible and of its fibre are made hammocks and many arts and crafts by the Indians. After an hour and a half we reach the Río Aro and take a rest at the last gas-station before our destination. The ride continues across the continuos prairies. One sees enormous black granite boulders. It is an impressive panorama of shimmering grassland and solitary Moriche palms lost in the landscape of overwhelming black rocks. 
We turn off the highway and head south on a small red dirt-road which lead us though the dense jungle to "Las Trincheras" where our hosts await us at the jungle camp. We unload the packs from the jeep and into the colonial house. We then hang our hammocks in a palm-roofed, round Indian building called a "churuata" which has a wonderful view of the Caura river. In the evening a big "parrilla" (barbecue) is prepared over an open fire. All the meals are served on the terrace, and from here we can enjoy the evening atmosphere accompanied by the sounds of the jungle and the river. 
A day to relax in the camp
Day 2. (B/L/D):
We start the day with a delicious breakfast on the terrace. There is the chance to take a walk through the jungle to the neighbouring village of "Jabillal" just to get a first impression of the vegetation. Also, a visit to a "conuco" (field cleared by burning) is worthwhile. During the dry season (november-april), a river beach exists near the village and swimming is possible without hesitation. For those with experience, there are kayaks and canoes on loan, or mountain bikes for a ride along the jungle trails. 
We meet for lunch on the terrace, then relax in the hammocks for a siesta before our first excursion in dugout canoe (curiara). Our destination is "Peña Negra", a huge granite rock laying in the middle of the Caura river. From there we have an overwhelming view of the deep green jungle and of the river's course which, in the dry season, is a labyrinth of boulders. We arrive back at the camp at sunset. We spend the night in our hammocks..
Overnight stay in hammocks.
Trip upriver in dugout canoe (130 km, 5 - 6 hours, depending on the water level)
Day 3. (B/L/D):
After breakfast we load our curiara, stowing all our equipment and packs in waterproof containers. A Trinchereño manages the canoe, as he knows best the river with all its rapids and dangerous, hidden rocks. After a half an hour, we reach the first rapids which our captain manages safely. As the water level is lower during the dry season, the shores are lined with white beaches that are perfect for swimming or resting. From time to time we pass a curiara with natives who live on the upper Caura. 
We greet them warmly (please no photographs!), and continue along the winding river through the jungle. It is a quite comfortable ride as long as we don't get caught in a tropical rain, as the wind can make it cold. In the distance, we see the first mountain that indicates that we are close to our destination. After 5-6 hours of travel, we see the glimmering white Playon Beach and hear the sound of the rapids. We unload the packs from the boat and into our Indian hut camp. We spend the night in hammocks.
Walk to Para Falls 
Day 4. (B/L/D): 
Early in the morning the landscape is covered by dense fog that is slowly broken up by the sun. We witness the first rays of sunshine breaking through to wake the still-sleeping region. After breakfast, we walk parallel to the river through the dense, steaming rainforest. The river, which we can hear but not see, runs through a canyon about 200 m away from us. After part of the hike, we have to climb a steep, and sometimes strenuous, mountain but which rewards us with the marvellous impressions of the jungle. Two hours later we hear in the distance the pounding thunder of the "Para Falls". 
Not far from here, above the falls, lies a former electricity research station where some Indians now live and administer the camp. We stay for a while by this fascinating natural spectacle of roaring waterfalls, have a refreshing swim in a lagoon above, and before returning, have the opportunity to buy arts and crafts from the Indians. We end the day with a campfire on the beach.
Return to Las Trincheras (approx. 4 - 5 hours)
Day 5. (B/L/D):
After a pleasant breakfast and loading the canoes, we begin the journey back. We arrive around noon at our camp in Las Trincheras. The afternoon is free at your disposal. If there is fish in the village, we grill fresh fish from the Caura river for dinner. 
Ride to Ciudad Bolívar (approx. 4.5 - 5 hours)
Day 6. (B/-/-): 
In our land cruiser, we drive back along the paved road to Ciudad Bolívar. We stop on the way at a friend's place, the Jugo Caura, to try the delicious, home-made fruit juices. In the distance we see the Angostura bridge and so we arrive back in Ciudad Bolívar.
End of the journey with flight possibility to Caracas
Day 7. (B/-/-):
After breakfast you are collected at your hotel and we will bring you to the nearby airport, from where you can get your connecting flight to Caracas.

Wildlife watching and Excursions in the Delta of Orinoco

It is done from a boat with a cane made of the tender trunk of the moriche palm. The fishing is baited with a piece of beef meat and making light movements in the water. You also visit the Community of the Warao Indians to appreciate their way of living, housing and buy the typical handicrafts of the region. In the afternoon navigation to San José de Bujas and transfer to Maturin where we take our flight to Porlamar. You spend the night in the Hotel Hilton Margarita. 

Over Flight of the Angel Falls and Excursion to the Antabares River

You take an early morning flight with an 5 seat propeller plane to Canaima with over flight of the Angel Falls . After arrival to our Lodge which is situated on the oscine of the Canaima black water Lagoon. In Canaima, where the Carrao river falls down into the lagoon with its seven cascades. We'll see this spectacle by near when we drive by boat nearly of this waterfalls. After a little walk through the jungle we'll have an enchanting experience, visiting the Salto Sapo. This is a small waterfall which lets us cross behind the curtain of water and gathers into a black lake. Overnight in a nice Lodge with private atmosphere and tasteful food.

Of Interest:
The National Park of Canaima is located at the southeast of the Bolivar State at approximately 225 km from the Orinoco River, in the area denominated "Gran Sabana". Due to the relevant and quality of its scenic and environmental resources, this area was decreed National Park on 1962 and its surface was expanded to 3 millions hectares on 1997. Has been proposed as Natural Patrimony of the Humanity by the International Union for the Preservation of the Nature.
In the great area of magnified landscapes, there are combined forest and savannas with the spectacular Tepuyes grandiose staircase landings of tubular shape with height up to 2,800 ms. and with more than 3.5 million years of antiquity. The peculiar ecosystems at the top of the Tepuyes are inhabited by animal and vegetable species unique in the world (endemic). From one of these "The Auyantepuy" sprouts the Angel Fall, the highest water fall in the world, with 1,005 ms. height. The region is crossed by numerous rivers which more to the north and often coming down from the "Gran Sabana" feed the big hydroelectric plants. All the way through the savannas of the region there are small communities of Pemones Indians which live of agriculture, hunting, fishing, handicraft and work related with tourism.

Flight over the Auyantepui & Angel Fall/ Visit of the Kavak Cavern
Day 4.: (B/L/D)
Today a spectacular excursion with a propeller-driven DC 3 airplane awaits us. We fly up the Carrao River and enter into the "Cañon del Diabolo" (Devil's Canon). We pass the steep cliff walls of the 2700 m high Auyantepui; below there is the Churún River, which gets its waters from the table-top-mountain. At the end of the canon we see, if weather permitting , the "Salto Angel", which is with almost 1000 m the longest free-falling waterfall in the world.
During the dry season especially the surface, with 700 sq. km, of the table-top-mountain is impressing, while during the rainy season (with good view and a lot of water) the Salto Angel is the absolute highlight.
We continue on and land on the base of the Auyantepui, in the small Indian village "Kavak". The village, built up in the typical style, is the ideal place for a small walk to the Kavak-Cavern. A narrow path takes us to the high-walled gorge, and the last part of the way we must swim. After about 20 minutes we arrive at the end of the gorge, where a glorious 20 m high waterfall plunges in the pool below. In the afternoon we fly back to our Lodge in Canaima.

Day 5. (B/L/D)
After breakfast flight or navigation to the Canaima Lagoon, where you will take a ride to the lagoon visiting the water falls that fall into the Lagoon from the Carrao river. Return flight to Porlamar in the afternoon and connection flight to Los Roques. Check-in at the typical nice Hostel/Posada on Los Roques

Of Interest:
In the Caribbean Sea, at 176 km. to the north of Caracas is located the Archipelago of Los Roques, one of the largest marine national park of the Caribbean with the exceptional landscapes of white sands, multicolor waters, crystal, warm and immense environmental richness.
The Archipelago Los Roques has an extension of 221,120 hectares and is conformed by 300 islands, islet, keys and sand banks, beside countless corralling reefs, shaping a ring that borders the main lagoon of shallow waters, with mangroves and corralling formations. The creation of the Archipelago is due to the corralling growth on a submarine rocky plateau landing that started after the last glacé. The Grand Roque" island constitutes the only emerged part of this plateau and it is there where is settled the permanent population of the "Archipelago Los Roques" since 1910. The inhabitants of Los Roques, around 900, are dedicated to the artisan fishing of lobsters, snails and tropical water fishes. Moreover, they are starting to work on public service activities and every time more with the growing tourism that begins to visit the area.
Los Roques has been visited since Pre-Colombian times by the Caribbean Indians and after the discovery by the Spanish, Dutch, British and French, who went there in search of protection when there were storms, for finishing or to extract salt. The archipelago was decreed National Park the 9th of August 1997 due to its extraordinary natural resources and escenics. Thanks to this decree and to the dedication of the National Park Institute sole authority. The conservation of the ecosystem of the park is guaranteed. The tourist activity is regulated and the number of visitors is limited. It was allowed only a limited number of lodgings in the town, which should maintain the architectural type typical of the coasts and islands of the east of the country.

Program Course

By land, by water, and by air we travel off the beaten tourist paths through Eastern Venezuela, thus getting to know a large part of the Venezuelan landscapes. We experience the Caribbean Coast by land vehicle and boat. Farther along we cross over the Coastal Cordillera, visit the world's largest asphalt lake, go by boat through the Orinocco Delta , and drive many a bad road through the Gran Sabana. The concluding highlights of the tour are the flight to Kavak and its same-named Gorge - a natural spectacle to be experienced. The flight goes over the Highest Waterfall on Earth. The participant takes an active part in striking the camps and helping overcome any difficulties en route. The physical demands are slight. A certain level of adaptability, sportsmanship, and team spirit are all that is expected. Accommodations depend on the location; we stay in comfortable lodges, hammock camps, and tents.

Flight Caracas - Carupano ; By Boat to the Paria Peninsula 
Day 1. Su: (-/L/-) 
Arrival and reception at Carúpano . then we drive to the small coastal town´s main market.
At the market we buy fresh provisions that we shall need for the following days during our coastal tour. A thick crowd jostles in this market of exotic fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, meat, and spices. In the port of Río Caribe we board our boat and head east along the coast until we reach the dream beach of Playa Medina. Under the palm trees our lunch buffet is set out, while we are able to enjoy the beach and sea. Around the afternoon time, we arrive at the beach San Juan de los Galdones. We unload all of our packs and take up our small, simple beach bungalows. The rest of the day we spend swimming, suntanning, or relaxing in hammocks.

Mountain Forests and Waterfalls
Day 2. Mo: (B/L/D)
We travel further along the rocky and thickly overgrown coast in our boat until we reach the fishing village of Santa Isabel. From the village, we wander up the "Río Grande" river to the "La Noria" waterfall. Glass-clear water surrounded by tropical vegetation awaits us and here we rest and refresh ourselves after the almost 2 hour long ascent. In the afternoon we return to the village.We stay the night here in the house of a fisherman family. These simple accommodations are located on the rocky slope over the bay and have a fantastic view of the sea.

Wandering from the Caribbean to the Atlantic
Day 3 Tu: (B/L/D)
With our boat we travel past more inlets until we reach "Cocoa Bay". Here a small, crystal-clear river flows across the beach and into the sea. Its waterfall invites a refreshing shower. We unload our packs and shoulder our rucksacks in preparation for crossing the Cordillera. We surmount a steep 500 m ascent along a jungle path to reach the mountain pass. From here we have a marvelous view of the coast and sea extending out below us. In a small village we can refresh ourselves with fresh fruit and cool water. After a short rest, there is a downhill walk to a Cocoa Plantation, where we learn more about the production of cocoa. We spend the night here in tents.

Cocoa Hacienda and Hot Springs
Day 4. Tu: (B/-/-)
We drive from the plantation along a small road through thick vegetation until we reach Río Salado and the small city of Güiria on the south side of the Paria peninsula. We rest a short while here in Venezuela's most easterly port and watch the fisherman at work. We then drive along the coast to Tunapui where we can visit the thermal springs. We arrive back in Carúpano at lunchtime and billet in a marvelously situated posada (hostel). The rest of the day is free.

Visit the City Market and Palm Tree Gardens
Day 5. Th: (B/-/-)
After a short stroll through the market with its abundant supply of tropical fruits and varieties of vegetables, we drive towards El Pilar. A further highlight is the visit to the botanical gardens facility in which is the greatest variety of palm trees in South America. Around lunch time we drive to Caripe.
After a curvy, mountain road, we arrive in the marvelously situated village hidden in a valley of the Turimiquire mountains. At dusk, we see the outswarming of the Guacharo birds (Oil birds) from the same-named cave. With loud shrieks, these day-blind birds leave the cave in their nightly search for food. We spend the night in a simple hotel.

Weird Cries in the Dark, & Through the Mangrove Jungles of the Orinoco Delta
Day 6. Fr: (B/-/D) 
In the morning we visit the Guacharo Cave. With approximately 10 km in length, it is the longest cave of stalactites and stalagmites in South America. Impressive are the thousands of Guacharo birds, also known as oil birds, which live in the cave and orient themselves, as do bats, by ultrasound. After venturing about 800 m in, the cries of the birds abruptly stop as the interior cave world changes from an high-ceilinged, voluminous cavern to a narrow, enclosed passage called El Silencio, or The Silence, where the stalactites and stalagmites are covered in lime crystals and colourfully reflect the latern light.
The journey continues on to the 370 km wide Orinoco Delta; one of the largest on earth. The Delta's area of almost 42,000 sq km is composed of jungle, mangrove forests, and a many-branched river system. In "San José de Buja", our boat waits ready to take us through this fascinating world. Mangrove jungle in its entire variety surrounds us as we travel the waters of the Caño Manamo. We visit the Warao Indians who have built their huts on wooden stilts. Despite the influences of civilization, these Indians live in many ways as they have lived for hundreds of years. With small boats, we penetrate deeper along the side branches of the Delta, and so, with a bit of luck, we see monkeys and parrots. We spend the night in a rustic camp facility amidst the mangroves.

Into the Heart of the Delta
Day 7. Sa: (B/L/-)
Early in the morning, we leave the camp and go by boat up the Caño Manamo in the direction of Tucupita. During our 4 hour journey we shall, with luck, see river dolphins, howler and capuchino monkeys, toucans, and parrots. In a small side branch of the river, we leave the boat and walk the marshy ground of the Delta's thick jungle. We learn of the typical vegetation and how the native people use the local plants and trees for various purposes. We try palm hearts, those of the ubiquitous palm trees here in the Delta. We visit Indian families who live in an open, stilt huts along the river bank. In the afternoon, we arrive in the town of Tucupita, where we billet in a simple hotel.

To the Land of the Soldiers of Fortune
Day 8. Su: (-/-/-)
In the nearlying town of Barancas, we visit a small museum for its exhibit of Pre-Columbian Pottery found in the sandy banks of the Orinoco. From the Delta we drive east to the barren Llanos. An endless expanse of Steppe landscape, it is also known as "the Burning Land" in the dry season. The cowboys set areas of old grass on fire to encourage new grass to grow for the enormous cattle herds. 
To reach our destination of Puerto Ordaz, we must cross the Orinoco by ferry. 
Directly south we now head into the land of the Soldiers of Fortune; gold and diamond miners. After 6 hours of driving, we lodge in a simple and clean hotel in Tumeremo.

By 4 X 4 to the Table-Top Mountains
Day 9. Mo: (-/L/D)
Early in the morning we set out and drive along the only connecting road with Brazil. Through thick jungle, past El Dorado, we drive until we reach "Km 88" - a romantic and wild region of gold diggers, tin huts, and rum saloons.
Along a winding road we go from the tropical jungle up to the plateau of the legendary Gran Sabana. On the way, we have the opportunity to see the "Salto Danto" waterfall.
The Gran Sabana is the land of legends and table-top mountains (called Tepuis in the language of the Indians, meaning "House of the Gods"). We drive off the paved main road and onto the sometimes difficult, red dirt road to Kavanayén. It is here that we come across the native Pemón Indians for the first time, where they have made their homes by the Mission Station of the Franciscan Order. We spend the night in dormitories in the Mission. 

Off-Roading and Wandering to the Karuai Waterfall
Day 10. Tu: (B/L/D)
To reach today's destination of Karuai, we have to overcome an extremely difficult 15 km stretch of road. In places, we must get out of the vehicle and walk, thus allowing the driver to attempt the pass with a lighter load. We shall be rewarded for our pains with a super view of the Tepui landscape. On a clear day, one can see up to 12 Tepuis on the horizon.
In Karuai the picturesque "Salto Hueso" waterfall awaits us. This place is reminiscent of a small paradise; ideal for swimming, or just suntanning on a large rock in view of this natural beauty. We spend the rest of the day on the sandy shores under the waterfall until, in the afternoon, we return to Karuai. We strike our camp here and finish the day beside a romantic campfire.

Of Interest: The Indians say that hundreds of years ago, "Salto Hueso" was the scene of a battle between hostile Indian tribes. Many died, and the corpses lay strewn all around. When the Spanish arrived in the area and found so many bleached bones glistening in the sun, they named the place "Salto Hueso", or "Bone Falls".
Mission Station Kavanayén / Chinak Merú Waterfall
Day 11. We: (B/L/-)
After breakfast, we take the same difficult route back towards Kavanayén and onto the Indian village of Iboribó. Here, we get into a boat and go to the "Chinak Merú" waterfall on the "Aponwao" river. This wide waterfall plummets 105 m down, and on sunny days there is a perpetual rainbow.
For those who wish, there is short excursion to the foot of the falls, to swim in the underlying lagoon. 
We drive further on until we meet up again with the paved main road, then head in the direction of Sta. Elena de Uairén. We arrive at the rapids of Kamoirán after about an hour's drive, and spend the night in a small and simple hotel.
Highlights of the Gran Sabana to Sta. Elena
Day 12. Th: (-/L/-)
We stop at several beautiful spots on the stretch to Sta. Elena de Uairén. We see the almost 50 m high waterfall "Kama Merú", and the "Jasper Falls" with its red river bed of blood-red jasper. We always have the opportunity to enjoy a short bath here. In the afternoon we arrive in Santa Elena de Uairén and billet in a wonderfully situated lodge. Sta. Elena is the largest settlement in the Gran Sabana, as well as the bordertown with Brazil. The population is a mix of Indians, Brazilians, and Venezuelan gold miners.
Flight over the Houses of the Gods "Auyantepui"
Day 13. Fr: (B/-/-)
Today a further highlight awaits us and, with luck with the weather, we will have a special and unforgettable experience. By scheduled flight in a DC 3, we fly over the Gran Sabana and the Tepuis. Weather permitting, we fly over the second largest of the Venezuelan Tepuis the "Chimanta" and "El Castillo", which rises from the savanna in the shape of a castle. We soon arrive at the Auyantepui whose enormous massif constitutes a world into itself. We fly past the longest free-falling waterfall on earth, Angel Falls, and then land at Canaima, an oasis in the middle of the jungle and savanna that is unreachable by road. We stroll, armed only with bathing suits and towels, to the spectacular Sapo waterfall (in rainy season only), behind which one can pass from one side to the other. After lunch, we can bathe in the marvelous tea-brown waters of the lagoon. We later fly back to either Cuidad Bolívar or Puerto Ordaz, where we spend the night in a clean and simple hotel.

Jeepsafari over the Tumirequire mountains

At 09:00 AM we leave Pto. La Cruz and drive with the cross-country vehicle along the curvy soastal road up to the mountain of Tumirequire. 
Our trip leads us to the mountain village "Altos de Sucre". With our 4 x 4wheel vehicle we will have an Off Road Drive near of the hill of Altos de St. Fe. From here we will walk about 1/2 hour trough the mystic jungle until we get to the hill . Here we will have a fantastic view over the Mochima Nationalpark and the Tumiriquiere mountains. A little rest and something for drinking is welcoming. 
After the lunch in a family house we will visit a coffee farm to learn something about cultivation and production of coffee. 
Over a bad road out of soil we drive along the mountain street, from where we have otherwise a marvelous view over the National Park of Mochima.
Directly beside the street there is the waterfall "San Pedrito", which waters plunge into a natural basin. Those who wish can walk from here in about 5 minutes to the basin. It is a fantastic place to take a refreshing bath.
Slowly we take the curvy road down to the coast. In the afternoon we will arrive in the fisher town "St. Cruz" where we get our room in a nice Posada with swimmingpool. In the evenig we will have a romantic dinner with candle light on a beach restaurant in St. Fe. Overnight in Posada with private bathroom, ventilator.
Boatexcursion to the Islands of N.P of Mochima
2.day: (B/L/-)
where we change the transport to our typical woodenboat (peñero) to the fantastic world of islands We will visit the "Picina" and "Arapo Island" to enjoy the beaches with the cristal water. We take snorkel equipment with us so you can explore the wonderfull underwaterworld with corals and tripical fishes. With some luck we will see Dolphines who are comming very close to the boat. In the afternoon we take the road along the coast back to Puerto La Cruz.
